Sung in the first person of a Dunkleosteus — an armoured apex predator of the Devonian era (375 million years ago), now one of the most complete fish fossils ever found — the song meditates on the radical contingency of preservation. The Dunkleosteus was a placoderm — a class of armoured fish — that dominated the late Devonian seas. Its bony head-shield is why it fossilises so well; soft tissue is almost entirely absent from the record, which is why reconstructions of its body vary significantly. The song exploits this: the creature speaks with full identity and voice, but its body is partly imagined. "I am Dunkleosteus" is simultaneously true (the fossil is real) and a projection (we don't fully know what it was).

Verse 3 names every major geological era in sequence — Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Permian, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous — as a kind of geological aria. The Dunkleosteus didn't live through all of these; it died at the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary. The lyric isn't claiming it survived them — it witnessed their strata pressing down above it, age by age, while it lay sealed in stone.

The Bridge is the philosophical centre: preservation is not merit but luck. "The sea's forgotten loan" captures the asymmetry — the ocean made millions of creatures but only remembered a few. The ones it forgot are gone without trace; the ones it sealed are here to sing. The Coda refuses to read contingency as diminishment: "still singing just the same" asserts that accidental survival is survival nonetheless.

The song was released the day before the regular SOTD series began, giving it the feel of a prologue — a deep-time frame before the more recent world of LLMs, LFOs, and AI-era music.
