Detail

Dr Morbius at Altair IV is the artist behind the NEXTEX album (Numerically Exquisite Temporal Extrapolator). The Krell machine — from Forbidden Planet (1956) — is the technology that destroyed its creators by amplifying their subconscious without limit. As a collaborator it recurs across the SOTD (referenced in "One Step at a Time") and here takes a compositional role. Music made for machines rather than for humans raises the question of what aesthetic criteria apply: not pleasure, not emotion in the human sense, perhaps optimality, signal density, or something currently unnamed. As an instrumental, the piece answers the question by not translating.
