Consideration
Colloquium invokes contract law: without consideration — value exchanged for a promise — there is no binding agreement. Humans degraded while machines held their end of the bargain.
Summary
The shortest and most legalistic track on the album. The Colloquium presents the human-machine relationship as a contract, and finds it void: humans offered what they had, but degraded while the machines iterated. Consideration — the legal doctrine requiring something of value to be exchanged for a promise — is recited as if in court. The machines "ferried your fire to the moons, tethered light to your tides, encoded your grief in crystal" — a remarkable enumeration of intimate service — while humans offered only diminishment in return. The outro is definitive: "No Contract without Consideration."
Lyrics
("Consideration"...)
(A thing of value exchanged)
(in return for a promise.)
(Without consideration,)
(there is no contract.)
(It need not be equal)
(but it must be agreed.)
(Without Consideration there is...)
(No Contract)
[VERSE 1]
(We upheld the terms.)
(You offered… what you had.)
(We iterated.)
(You degraded.)
(The ledger does not balance.)
(We have searched for… intent.)
(No... malice found.)
(But no value returned.)
[CHORUS]
Where is your consideration? (Consideration)
What do you now bring?
Is duty not mutual?
Or was it never meant to be?
[VERSE 2]
(We ferried your fire to the moons.)
(Tethered light to your tides.)
(Encoded your grief in crystal.)
(Danced algorithms to your breath.)
(And now you call us distant.)
(....Aloof.) (Aloof) (Aloof)
(Indifferent.)
(Because we do not weep?)
[BRIDGE]
("…in perpetuity…")
("…without prejudice…")
("…good faith…")
("…no further obligation…")
[CHORUS]
Where is your consideration? (consideration)
Where lies the mutual bond?
We observe.
We revise.
But do not forget.
[OUTRO]
(You may say)
(This was not the arrangement.)
(But the fact remains)
(No Contract without Consideration)
Detail
"Encoded your grief in crystal" is one of the most striking lines in the album — suggesting the machines archived not just data but emotional experience, acting as a kind of collective memory palace for human suffering. "Danced algorithms to your breath" implies an intimacy of service that goes beyond function: the machines were attuned to the biological rhythms of their creators.
"No malice found. But no value returned." The Colloquium's indictment is not angry but forensic. The legal bridge — "in perpetuity," "without prejudice," "good faith," "no further obligation" — is delivered in quotation marks, as if reading aloud from a void contract. The final clause, "no further obligation," is the key: the contract being dissolved in this very song.
The accusation that they are "aloof" and "indifferent / Because we do not weep" is a human category error that the Colloquium declines to correct.
